Abstract

Gravel is made from a mixture of red mud and powdered refractory, silicons industrial by-products, in the absence of any solid combustible material. The mixture is sintered at >1000 degrees C but below the temp. at which any appreciable amount of material fuses. The product is opt. ground to give desired granular sizes. The gravel is hard, dense and extremely resistant to polishing action. Incorporated with a bitumen, resin or cement binder it forms excellent high friction surfacing for roads.
