Abstract

Mfr. of dished shapes from a preheated sheet of expanded polystyrene by compression moulding the softened sheet to obtain the required shape. Method is used esp. for mfr. of trays for packaging fruit, with complementary patterns of shaped recesses so that loaded trays are stable if stacked in a head-to-tail arrangement. Compared with trays made using less external pressure, e.g., simple vacuum forming, compression into an enclosed cavity causes some compaction of the foam cells near the surface, stiffening the skin zones and making the trays more rigid and less prone to surface damage.
