Abstract

Tiles for covering surfaces of walls, etc. include a layer of moulded microporous polyurethane material. Used esp. for making panels representing groups of smaller tiles, where the panels may be laid up relatively quickly to cover large areas of e.g. flooring with the appearance of the use of a greater number of smaller elements. The panels are more resistant than PVC tiles, lighter and more flexible than ceramic tiles, can readily be drilled to accept fastenings, and provide some thermal and acoustic insulation. The polyurethane layer pref. incorporates a layer of thin fabric or non-woven fibres (polyester, polyamide, cellulosic), and/or 10-50 wt. % of a filler, pref. barytes. The exposed surface of the tile may be covered with a thin skin of dense polyurethane resin, opt. pigmented.
