Abstract

971,202. Laminates. ALLIED CHEMICAL CORPORATION. June 14, 1963 [July 3, 1962], No. 23884/63. Heading B5N. A roof insulation comprises a rigid core of polyurethane foam, “-8 inches thick, covered on either side by a layer of waterproofed felt. The foam core contains at least 50% closed cells which may be filled with a chlorinated fluorinated hydrocarbon, preferably trichloro-monofluoromethane. As shown in Fig. 2, the covering layers comprise waterproofed felts 18, 20, saturated with, and having coatings 19<SP>1</SP>, 23, 21, 22<SP>1</SP> of, bituminous material such as asphalt or pitch. At least one of the felt layers has a layer of non-stick material 22 on the face remote from the core. Fig. 1 shows the insulation incorporated in a composite roof structure wherein the insulation 15 covers the roof deck 10, which may be wood, poured gypsum or concrete, precast slates, fluted steel sheet or other structural deck, and which may be provided with a vapour barrier 11 comprising a layer of waterproofed roofing felt 12 and waterproof adhesive layer 13. On top of the insulation are provided alternate layers of waterproofed felt 25 and waterproofing coating material 26. The waterproofing agent may be asphalt or coal tar pitch. The layer 24 of waterproofing coating effects a bond between the lower of the felt coverings 25 and the top of the insulation 22, and also serves to bond abutting units along the lines J. It may be applied at elevated temperatures (350-450‹ F.), or alternatively an adhesive may be used which requires no heat. On the uppermost layer 26 is applied a layer of slag or gravel 27 or a layer of tiles to form a wearing surface.
