Abstract

A rear wheel cycle brake operated by a back pedalling action has an actuator (30) mounted at one end of the bottom bracket (12) i.e. the end opposite to the crank wheel (18), through which the crank spindle (14) passes with a set of ratchet teeth retaining a corresponding set of cylindrical pawls (32) which rest around the spindle. The teeth are shaped so that when the pedals are turned in the normal manner to drive the chain (22) there is no frictional resistance, but when the pedals are rotated backwards, the locking action of the pawls causes the actuator to rotate through part of a turn. The actuator is connected to a rod system (34) which is pulled against the force of a spring (36) to operate the brake (28). Further variations of this basic design are given.
