Abstract

The mortar bomb shell has an outside and inside casing and the space between these walls is filled with balls embedded into rubber or plastics. These balls form the effective fragments and they are firmly held also by a thin walled inner lining. This arrangement provides an optimised stable lightweight bomb which can be fired over longer distances from a relatively lightweight mortar. The inner lining sections have outwards folded flanges which contact the inner wall of the outer casing either directly or by means of a thin flexible layer. The flat flange faces are welded together and hence the edge of the rib formed is in contact with the outer casing wall at its maximum girth.
