Abstract
Rows of ventilating channels (2) are separated by horizontal (1) and vertical partitions. All the horizontal partitions except the lower ones, of the central row are bent downwards, these tongues (1a) being longer at the top channel and decreasing towards the bottom channel. When two bricks are laid end to end, all these tongues form a good key for the mortar. In manufacture, these tongues are formed by inserting a wedge shaped tool into the soft clay before firing, immediately after the cutting wire has cut the brick. In an alternative design all the channels terminate in tongues and by using a short triangular too, all the tongues are made the same length.
