Abstract

The vehicle direct voltage regulator and battery charging circuit is presented in which the power generator produces a three phase output which is rectified and regulated using thyristors. The generator output is connected to the supply via a full wave rectifier bridge comprising six thyristors. The rectified supply is connected directly across the battery terminals. A switch connects the direct supply to the control circuit which consists of a voltage monitoring arrangement of Zener diodes and a transistor oscillator which oscillates when the monitored voltage falls below a certain threshold. The oscillator frequency is significantly higher than the original generator output and the output is taken via a multiwinding transformer to the gates on the thyristors. The effect is that if the supply voltage falls, the oscillator runs and turns on the thyristors. This continues until the threshold voltage is exceeded. The required regulating and charging operation is thus effected.
