Abstract
1,202,410. Automatic voltage control. CANADIAN GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Dec.29, 1967 [Feb.14, 1967], No.58991/67. Heading G3R. [Also in Divisions H2 and H3] A D.C.-A.C.-D.C. converter comprising a controlled rectifier inverter 27 has its output voltage regulated by varying the frequency of an oscillator 61 which provides firing pulses for the rectifier. The frequency is varied by deriving a D.C. control signal from winding 21 on transformer 19 and using it to control the impedance of a transistor 66 coupled in the timing circuit of the oscillator. In order to stop operation when the input drops too low, transistor 81 and bias circuit 51, 52, 53, 54, 55 are provided. Transistor 81 is normally conducting, holding diode 83 reverse biased. If the input falls below a predetermined value, transistor 81 cuts-off, diode 83 conducts and transistor 66 saturates to stop the oscillator 61. To provide a slow build-up of output voltage when switching on, transistor 66 is also controlled by a CR circuit 84, 85 which initially saturates the transistor. As capaciter 85 charges, the conductivity of transistor 66 decreases and unijunction transistor 68 starts to oscillate, the frequency of oscillation rising as the conductivity of transistor 66 falls. Inverter operation. Application of a trigger pulse to thyristor 27 allows capaciter 26 to charge sinusoidally through choke 26, the initial positive half cycle of oscillation passing through the thyristor. When the current reverses at the end of this half cycle it passes through diode 28 and cuts off the thyristor. The next positive half cycle cannot pass through the rectifier, but is diverted through winding 20 of the transformer, the reactance of this winding being larger than that of choke 25. The next trigger pulse restarts the cycle.
