Abstract

The prodn. of alkaline earth metal sulphate in the effluent from a wet purificn. system for removing SO2 from a gas contg. it as an impurity is increased by contacting the aq purifying soln contg an alkaline earth metal e.g. Ca with a flow of gas to be purified so as to produce sulphites and sulphates, and adding a predetermined amt of oxidising catalyst to the soln and an oxygen rich gas to oxidise the sulphites to sulphates, while the soln is kept basic by addn of another alkaline earth metal to ppte. the solids esp. the alkaline earth metal sulphate. Since calcium sulphite tends to form as a voluminous mass of interlocking crystals it clogs the appts. and is difficult to dispose of being more soluble than the sulphate. The calcium sulphate produced by oxidation however, not only finds use as gypsum, but forms a spreadable powder on dehydrating the ppte.
