Abstract
To the spent acid is added a cpd. e.g. ammonium sulphate, which reacts with HNO2 to liberate N2, these being sufficient of this cpd. to react with all the N oxides present, and a source of Si, e.g. AlMg silicate, in quantity sufficient to react with all the fluorides, and the resultant mixture is then heated to 150-275 (200-220) degrees C. The process has only one stage, it is rapid, avoiding problems of storage, handling and corrosion, and the appts. is relatively cheap. Dilution of the acid is obviated.
