Claims (7)

What we claim is :
1. A process for purifying spent sulfuric acid derived from the nitration of an aromatic fluorine-containing compound and containing as impurities nitrogen oxides titratable as nitrous acid, organic compounds, and organic and inorganic fluorides, which comprises adding to said spent acid an amount of a compound capable of yielding nitrogen gas on reaction with nitrous acid sufficient to react with all of said nitrogen oxides present and a source of silicon sufficient to react with all of said organic and inorganic fluorides present, and then heating the resulting mixture to a temperature in the range 150-275 °C.
2. The process of claim 1, in which the treated spent acid is heated in the range 200-220 °C.
3. The process of claim 1, in which the heating is continued until the level of total fluoride is reduced to 30 ppm or less, and the percentage of nitrogen oxides titratable as nitrous acid and the level of organic compounds are reduced to 0.1 percent or less.
4. The process of claim 1, in which the spent acid is derived from the nitric-sulfuric acid nitration of p_-trifluoromethylphenylchloride .
5. The process of claim 1, in which the compound capable of yielding nitrogen gas on reaction with nitrous acid is ammonium sulfate.
6. The process of claim 1, in which the source of silicon is a complex aluminum magnesium silicate.
7. A process for purifying spent sulfuric acid substantially as hereinbefore described with particular reference to the examples .
