Abstract

A multi-stage screw press for fruit juice extraction esp. grapes employes progressively increasing compression in one stage followed by decompression and then renewed and increased compression in the next stage. The press comprises a single pressing screw shaft within a perforated draining chamber, the shaft having several successive coaxial sections, each conically divergent towards the discharge end and with a relieved portions between sections to provide interstage decompression. Pref. the relieved shaft portion at the end of the first stage section runs in a bearing mounted on an arm which is fixed to the wall of the chamber and sealed to disentangle and break up compressed material from the first stage. At the end of the second stage a shoulder is formed where the major dia. of the second section of the shaft is reduced to the minor dia. of the third section providing a zone where the material being processed rotates upon itself before moving into the third compression stage. Screw speed and raw material feed are pref. adjusted automatically in response to chamber pressures, measured at the discharge ends of stages one and two by deflection of flaps attached to the screw. Extremely high yield extraction are obtd. at controlled pressures which avoid muddy juice. The control is automatic and obviates skilled operation to obt. high quality juice.
