Abstract

Sugar is extracted from sugar canes by sugar mill presses. The canes, which have undergone a preliminary prepn. and division, are introduced into a first mill which extracts juice. The canes are then sent to a second mill after having been steeped in the juice coming from a third mill; these operations are repeated as necessary to obtain the required degree of extn. The juices from the first and second pressings are sent forward for further theatment. The steeping liq. is circulated in counter-current with the canes in a vertical U-shaped conduit, contng. a conveyor, placed between the mills. By effecting the steeping and the leaching simultaneously the yield of sugar is increased. The operation is entirely out of contact with the air.
