Abstract

Each animal tail esp. mink tail is split longitudinally into two tapering lengths which are sewn together alongside each other to make a single piece with fur on one side and the inter-length, tapering gap filled with a leather inset. A number of such pieces are sewn together as a rectangular strip with the pieces angled at about 45 degrees to the strips longer side, several of the strips then being sewn together at their longer edges to form the sheet. Essentially, the two lengths of each split tail are rejoined in longitudinally offset relationship so that each piece has a stepped edge remote from the inset; each strip then has a zig-zag long edge which is mated, brick-bond fashion, with a corresponding zig-zag edge on the adjoining strip, the strips, being sewn together along this zig-zag joint. A sheet of fur is produced from which the garment trade can produce coats coats, cloaks etc. Much less fur is wasted in trimming to make the joints between strips, e.g. up to 98% of original fur is utilised. The zig-zag seam between strips does not tend to produce obvious 'partings' in the fur of a garment, as did the previous straight seams.
