Abstract
In a flexible fermentation tower used for obtg. a gas, contg. a high proportion of methane, from the organic constituents of waste water and sewage by anaerobic putrifaction, non-rigid matls are used to replace the rigid matls. used hitherto., although the method of operation remains the same. The flexible reservoir is made from a polyester fabric, coated on both sides with polyvinyl chloride, to form a cylinder with an attached base and a roof. The reservoir is suspended on a steel framework which rests on a reinforced concrete foundation which has the shape of a shallow basin. Inlet and outlet conduits, for the fermentation mass, are buried in the concrete and are connected to the base of the reservoir by flanges. An escape pipe for the gas is provided in the roof while a gutter surrounds the reservoir to prevent any pollution of the ground. The tower operates at temps. higher than 30 degrees C., so it is desirable to apply an insulating layer of polyurethane foam or panels of cellular material over the whole construction. The flexible tower is more easily handled and is much less expensive than the rigid variety. The gas produced is used as an energy source for the prodn. of heat or electricity.
