Abstract

Positive or negative thermal differentials are determined for thermal analysis of their effects on the change of phase of a chemical sample. Problems of imprecision in quantitative thermal analysis are overcome. A sample is placed in a crucible (41) and a control or reference sample is placed in a second crucible (42) in a casing (1) heated by an element (3) connected to a power supply (50). The two crucibles have associated thermocouples (43, 43) connected to measure a difference potential (DELTA-V) giving differential temperature (DELTA-T). An inner container (2) below the crucibles contains a temperature probe (40) connected to the power supply to permit precise control of a constant thermal flow. Both containers are filled with gas such as argon at slightly greater than atmospheric pressure via an inlet (120) towards an exhaust (110).
