Abstract

A submersible pump which is used for mineral extraction in boreholes has a pump driven by an electric motor and has a seal on the motor shaft which divides the pump area from an area fitted with the operating liquid. A pressure vessel is arranged below the motor so that in the space up to the seal there is constant oil pressure, which is higher than the hydrostatic pumping pressure on the other side of the seal. Fluid leaking through the seal consists of small quantities of oil which lubricate the pump, rather than the highly corrosive operating fluid.
