Abstract

In the desulphurising of iron melts by the high speed advance into the bottom zone of the melt of at least one flexible extrusion consisting of a thermally decomposable binder and a finely divided desulphurising agent of a mixture of such agents, the decomposition product of the binder or its reaction products brings about an automatic mixing of the bath as well as reducing reaction conditions therein. Pref. a number of extrusions is passed simultaneously through the surface of the bath at different positions. The process reduces the slag-metal oxygen potential so that desulphurising is more effective because of the reducing conditions and gives effective mixing and thereof more uniform desulphurising without the risks involved in introducing the desulphurising agents in a stream of potentially explosive hydrocarbon gas e.g. natural gas.
