Abstract

A phenol of formula (I):- (where R1 and R2 are each H, 1-10C alkyl, 6-10C cycloakly or aralkyl and R3 is H or -OH) is alkylated with a low m.w. polymer of butadiene contg. lateral or pendant vinylic gps. The polymer pref. has benzyl radicals and H as terminal gps. and has a m.w. 150-3000. The molar ratio of phenol to C4 units in the polymer is pref. 0.1-4.0:1. Suitable phenols have 1-10C alkyl substs. esp. ortho-, meta- or para-cresols, or phenol itself. The prod. is used as adhesives prods. in natural and synthetic polymeric systems esp. in corded elastomeric sheets. It may be used as copolymer with vinylpyridine and is esp. useful with elastomers such as polybutadiene, polyisoprene and natural rubber.
