Abstract

1389886 Surface modification of rubbers NIPPON ZEON CO Ltd 25 Sept 1972 [27 Sept 1971] 44202/72 Headings C3E and C3P A shaped article whose surface is composed of a natural or synthetic rubber containing ethylenic double bonds is contacted with an alkyl or haloalkyl hypohalite in order to reduce friction and improve the ozone resistance of the rubber. Preferred hypohalites are tertiary alkyl, especially tertiary butyl, hypochlorites and hypobromites. They may be used neat or in solution, preferably in a solvent which swells but does not dissolve the rubber, e.g. benzene. Exemplified rubbers are natural rubber and polybutadiene, acrylonitrile-butadiene, ethylene-propylenediene, isobutylene-isoprene and styrene-butadiene synthetic rubbers, each rubber being vulcanized and formed into sheets for the surface treatment.
