Abstract

Unpleasant odour emitted by organic materials, e.g. refuse subjected to microbial decomposition is eliminated by treating such a material with a compsn. contg. (in g. per ton of the material being treated) (a) 25-300 g. of a copper salt (pref. sulphate, nitrate or chloride); (b) 25-1500 g. of HNO3 and/or a nitrate (pref. Na or K nitrate); (c) 1-25 g. of HNO2 and/or Na or K nitrite; and (d) 0-1200 g. of an acid cpd. (pref. HCl, HNO3, H2SO4 or their acid salts, citric or acetic acid) in an amt. sufficient to lower the pH below 7. A vehicle such as water can be opt. added in an amt. up to 50% w.r.t. the weight of the compsn. Used for treatment of latrines, stables, dunghills, slaughter-house refuses, cellulose prodn. wastes etc. Bad odour is eliminated by suppressing the activity of anaerobic microorganisms decomposing organic matter.
