Abstract

The process is for making an object from at least two airtight parts of glass, ceramic or metal, where a viscous bonding agent is applied to the joint faces, the bonding agent consisting of a powdered glass with a low m. pt. suspended in a carrier fluid; the object is then heated to evaporate the liq. carrier and to convert at least part of the glass to a crystalline phase. At least the joint faces are preheated before the bonding agent is applied. The preheating temp. is pref. 80-150 degrees C., esp. 100 degrees C and the bonding agent is pref. applied using a small gap between the parts being joined and sealed. Used in the mfr. of gas discharge panels. No additional sealing ring is needed between the front and back plates of the panel.
