Abstract

A three lobed piston from a rotating piston engine has conventional tip seals at the apices of the piston and also has strip seals disposed in arcuate grooves adjacent the corresponding arcuate edges of the piston. The strip seals serve to seal the end faces of the piston against the end walls of the chamber in which the piston rotates. The seals are of high strength steel and their tips adjacent the chamber are rounded and optionally hard chrome plated. An expander bracelet at the base of one groove urges the seal outwardly against the chamber. Preferably two strip seals are disposed side by side in each groove.
