Abstract
1371582 Rotary positive-displacement machines RAMSEY CORP 6 Sept 1972 [1 Oct 1971] 41327/72 Heading F1F In a Wankel-type I.C. engine gas seals for the piston 10 comprise apex seals 40 each of which has in cross-section substantially a T-shaped profile, is furnished with ribs 41a, 41b, that slide on the inner peripheral surface of the housing (not shown) and can pivot about a longitudinal axis within a groove 20. A carrier 50a lodged in each groove 20 has a rectangular groove 56 to accommodate a cylindrical portion 70 of the respective seal, a waist portion 71 permitting the seal to pivot. Each rib may have a wear-resistant coating 43. United corner and side seal members 21, 22 are also comprised in the gas seals and are coupled to the carriers so as to prevent the latter turning in the grooves 20. The seals 40 may have flat-sided webs, or "uprights", instead of the portions 70, 71, Fig. 4 (not shown), the corner members 22 and carriers then being modified to permit the latter to turn in the grooves therefor, Figs. 6 to 10 (not shown). Parts of the piston adjacent the grooves 20 may be undercut, as shown, to obviate fouling of the lateral parts of the apex seals.
