Abstract

The spectrophotometer for analysing samples in the nanolitre or picogramme size range comprises a leak-proof measurement chamber (10) have one or more sample holders (11), which may be traversed by one or more light beams. A pump (29) is associated with the chamber (10). A light source (12) emits a beam in the direction of the chamber (10) and has one or more components of known wavelength; and a detection unit (13) receives the light beam after it has traversed the chamber (10). The beam is focussed inside the chamber just above the sample holder, by means of a suitable optical system. The detection unit has one or more analysers sensitive to the wavelengths in the beam. The atomisation is achieved by vaporisation using Joule-effect heating.
