Abstract

A capacitor discharges through the primary of an induction coil. It is charged through a saturating transformer and its discharge is controlled by a thyristor. The primary of the transformer contains transistors which are locked by the contact breaker. When the contact breaker opens the transistors are unlocked, current flows through the transformer primary and at the same time the thyristor allows the capacitor to discharge. When the transformer saturates the transformer secondary current reverses and charges the capacitor through a diode. The capacitor holds the charge until the next opening of the contact breaker. The circuit prevents energy passing from the transformer to the capacitor while the latter is discharging, which in conventional circuits causes misfiring.
