Abstract

Glass compsn. contains 35-60 mol % SiO2 as vitrifier and as modifiers, (A) 5-20 mol % glass intermediate network forming trivalent oxide e.g. Al2O3 and/or an oxide of lanthanide series, (B) 15-35 mol % glass intermediate network modifier, e.g. ZnO, BeO and/or ZrO2 and (C) 10-30 mol % glass network modifier, e.g. MgO, CaO, BaO and/or SrO. Pref. (B) + (C) content is >35 (35-50) mol %. The glass is used for e.g. microwave guides, transparent casings, glass fibre-reinforced fixtures and other uses requiring fibres having a high modulus and strength. Glass compsns. have Knoop hardness >750, esp. >800, Young's modulus >17 x 106 p.s.i. g. low dielectric loss, dielectric const. 10, and low density.
