Abstract

Cpds. of formula (I) (where R = alkyl, pref. 1-6C, or phenyl, and the nitrogen atom of the barbituric acid may also be substituted), which are prepd. by combining one mole of barbituric acid (which may be mono-substd. or the ethylene gp.) with one mole of papaverine base, are used in medicaments for the treatment of cardiovascular disorders, since they have spasmolytic, hypotensive antiarrhythmic and coronary dilating properties. (I) have a spasmolytic action which is greater than the papaverine and barbituric acid starting materials, a reduced hypnotic effect, and an increased coronary dilating effect. (I) may be used for conditions in which papaverine itself can not be used.
