Abstract

The upper part of the reactor (A) is connected by a sloping shaft (8) with the base of the generator (B) and the upper part of the regenerator is connected with the lower part of the reactor by an oppositely sloping shaft (22). A fluidised bed (4) is formed in the reactor by feeding refuse and finely powdered carbon from above into the reactor and by blowing air and water vapour through from below, and the charge is consumed by pyrolysis in the reactor at between 400 and 900 deg.C. A fluidised bed in formed in the regenerator by similar feed openings for air, steam, or fuel gas, and there is a side entry (14) about half way up for ambient or heated air resulting in combustion at a temperature between 580 and 1200 deg.C.
