Abstract

Foamed polyolefins, having smooth surfaces and even, closed pores, are prepd. by mixing, by wt., 100 pts. polyolefin with 0.01-3 pts. cross-linking agent, 0.1-30 pts. blowing agent which decomposes at temps. above decompsn. temp. of cross-linking agent and 0.01-2(0.1-1)esp. 0.01-0.5 pts. gas-trapping agent; shaping the mixt. and heating to a temp. above blowing agent decompsn. temp., esp. under normal press. Pref. polyolefins are homo- or copolymers of C2H4 or C3H6. Cross-linking agent may be an organic peroxide, an azide or a Si-contg. peroxide. Gas-trapping agent may be di- or triallyl cyanurates or isocyanurates, polyallyl esters of polycarboxylic acids, cpds. contg. >=2 acryloyloxy or methacryloyloxy gps., polymers with many double bonds in side chains and triallyl phosphate. Vol. of gas generated by blowing agent is >=2 - and >=35 cc/g, after heating for 2 and 10 min. respectively to 180 degrees C. Pref. mixt. as sheets or foils, is heated to foaming on a wire mesh in a hot air furnace.
