Abstract

The motor drive shaft (2) is ffited with a drum (1) on which are varying angled helical strips (3 & 4) with a given angle for each speed required. The drum meshes with a gear wheel (5) fitted on the driven shaft, in the place of teeth it is fitted with rollers (7) which engage with the helical strips. The drum and gear transmit rotary motion to the driven shaft. To change gear the drum is moved axially relative to the gear bringing a differently angled helix to bear on the wheel fitted with rollers. Use of the rollers reduces friction in the apparatus to a minimum.
