Abstract

The sail is in the form of a hemisphere made of segments of light-weight material such as that used for parchutes. The outer edges of the segments are surrounded by an inflatable collar which is sewn on to the segments and held closed by lacing which passes through holes of 3mm. dia. at intervals of 50mm. The collar is provided with an inflation valve. Control cables (g) of braided nylon are attached to the collar at four points equally spaced around the circumference. A decompression hole is provided at the top of the hemisphere. When the collar is inflated with hydrogen or helium the sail is sefl-supporting.
