Abstract

Light waves passing through fibre-optical light guides can be taken off from or fed into a dielectric wave guide at any desired point. This is done by arranging the fibre-optical light guide at the desired spot at a certain optimum angle, which depends on the excited mode of the waveguide, by means of an optical cement or a liquid such as cinnamaldehyde with refractive index higher than that of the waveguide. This is a simpler and more convenient way of joining a waveguide and a fibre-optical light guide at any point than prism or grating couplers.
