Abstract

1437792 Light guides BELL-NORTHERN RESEARCH Ltd 25 June 1973 [26 June 1972] 30136/73 Heading G2J [Also in Division H1] An apparatus for coupling a laser beam 10 to an optical fibre 14, 15 comprises a planar waveguide 12, a coupler for coupling the beam 10 into the waveguide, e.g. a grating 11 or a prism, means for focusing the coupled beam at an exit of the waveguide, and means for mounting the fibre with its core 15 coaxial with the optic axis of the focusing means and near the exit. The focusing means may comprise a taper in the waveguide extending towards the exit and/or a thin film lens (17) on the waveguide, see Figs. 2 to 5 (not shown), and the mounting means may comprise a channel (21, 22) in a substrate 16 which supports the waveguide, see Fig. 6 (not shown). The substrate may be of silicon, with an interlayer 19 of silica or epoxy resin.
