Abstract

A simple, inexpensive and robust Hooke joint joins two rotating shafts which undergo variations in angle without alteration of speed. Two shafts (1, 2) are joined together by a ball and socket joint (3, 4, 5, 6). Either shaft can be the driver. In each shaft, equidistant from the centre (O) of the ball joint, is a pin (A, B) mounted in a needle roller bearing. An arm fits on, and is driven by, each pin and consists of a yoke (10, 14) and a shaped rod (9, 13) terminating in a second ball and socket joint (16, 17). Drive from first shaft rotates both pin and arm assemblies and then the driven shaft.
