In the chemical estimation of a substance by specific colorimetry, in which a coloured substance is bound to a specific reagent for the substance to be estimated or to an identical substance for the specific reagent to the substance to be estimated, the specific reagent or identical substance is fixed to a solid phase; the first substance and the identical substance with specific reagent are reacted in soln.; and the coloured soln. is assayed optically by comparison with standard solns. after sepn. of the solid phase. Process is esp. useful for immunological assays. Pref. the identical substance is a substance which competes with the test substance and reacts with the specific reagent.
