Abstract

Alcohols polluted by water are regenerated in a vessel packed with e.g. zeolite particles having a high affinity for water. The vessel is vibrated so that particles slowly move into a furnace zone where the alcohol is vapourised whilst the water remains in liquid form. A stream of purge gas, pref. dry air, is blown through the heated zone dispelling the water. The alcohol is re-liquified at the inlet cool purge gas and collected at a separate outlet. The process can be used for the dehydration of alcohols, e.g. isopropyl alcohol used for cleaning semi-conductors in electronics industry.
