Abstract

Profiles with a rigid casing and lightweight cores are made by casting a layer of a wet mix filled cement on to a moving belt to form a layer which can support one or more foamed plastic cores continuously extruded on to the surface of the concrete layer. A subsequent discharge of more of the cement mix over the foam profile(s) anchored onto initial layer forms a rigid casing enclosing the foam core(s). Used for mfr. of building elements with lighweight cores to improve the stiffness/wt. ratio. Mfr. of continuous profiles which can be cut to various required lengths reduces unit costs compared with individual mouldings. Core foam sections can be prefabricated thinner than can readily be made by in situ casting. the component structures fit better than assemblies built from separate prefabricated cement and foam profiles. The core profiles should be mechanically generated foams of amino- or phenolic-resin based compositions, pref. incorporating an acidic crosslinking catalyst. Also claimed is the use of urea-formaldehyde foams using aq. phosphoric acid hardeners.
