Abstract

A relatively large number of glass monofilaments extruded by gravity initially and then fed by rollers etc. after cooling and treatment with anti-sticking agents etc. are wound on to reels in a take-up section of the machine and both the feeder mechanism and the take-up mechanism are subject to transient speed variations whose time constants are significantly less than the overall process cycle time of the machine. In order to reduce wastage, eliminate breakage by snatching etc. and jamming of the machine, a regulation system is included in the machine based on simultaneous detection of the linear speed of the filaments at the exit from the feed and the entry to the take-up mechanisms the error signal output from a difference element fed by the two signals being used to regular the speed of the feed mechanism in such a way as to reduce the error to zero. The speed variation is applied to the feed speed by the servo-mechanism controlling a brake esp. magnetic friction type at the feed end of the system and in addition there may be a servo-controlled tensioner to maintain the filament tension constant.
