Abstract
1372729 Winding filaments JOHNS-MANVILLE CORP 21 Dec 1971 [30 Dec 1970] 59257/71 Heading D1J [Also in Divisions B5 and Cl] In a melt spinning process wherein filaments are drawn from orifices of a receptacle containing molten material e.g. glass, nylon or cellulose acetate, the temperature of the air flow induced by the movement of the filaments is measured by positioning in close proximity to an array of the filaments and the orifices at least one thermocouple the output signals of which are monitored to detect a change in the temperature of the air flow whereby disruption or breakage of filaments is sensed. The signals may be applied to a control system for regulating the operation of the filament drawing apparatus. In the apparatus shown, streams of molten glass are extruded through orifices 11 in a bushing 10 to form filaments 13 which pass over felt pads 17 or a transfer roll (not shown) to receive a liquid dressing or finish and are assembled into strands 18 (each of which may contain several hundred filaments) in two stages by grooved rollers 14 and 19. The strands are wound into packages 20 by traverse mechanisms 21 and winding tubes 22 mounted on a collet 23. The driving motor 24 is energised through a programmer and motor control 25 which starts a traverse motor 26 and a collet reciprocation drive 27, a set time interval after the initiation of collet rotation. the strand motions impelled by the camming forms 28 and a reciprocated carriage 29 establishing the winding pattern. Signals from thermocouples 32 are fed to an amplifier 33 which calibrates the signals for operating temperatures of interest and applies them to a control system. In one application, a signal is fed to a computer programmed to maintain the operating efficiency of the bushing or providing a feed-back control signal to reduce bushing temperature while the winder is doffed.
