Abstract

The base on which the surfacing is laid is covered with a layer of at least two millimetres of binder which is usually bitumen. The bitumen may contain filler. Onto the binder layer is laid coated gravel of between two millimetres and twenty five millimetres in particle size. But the maximum range between the smallest and largest particles is eight millimetres. The quantity of gravel used is such that between 50 and 95 per cent of the layer is binder. The gravel is tightly packed to give a good resistance to crushing in one plane and deformability in another.
