Abstract

Explosives e. g. nitrocellulose, nitroglycerine, pentaerythritol tetranitrate, are bonded with a thermosetting or chemosetting plastic mix which contains the catalysts required for initiating and accelerating the polymsn reaction in a microencapsulated form. The encapsulated catalysts are protected from the plastic binder during mixing with the explosives and therefore long mixing times and intimate mixings can be obtd. without premature setting of the binder. When fully mixed the prod. is pressed into compacted shapes, during which pressing operation the microcapsules are ruptured, the catalyst is freed to mingle with the binder and polymsn. to a solid bonded charge follows automatically without further processing. Process is esp. for propellent mfr.
