Abstract

A process combines features of the conventional cooling tower which cools water by evaporation, and a conventional cooler battery which transfers heat to cooling air without loss by evaporation. A contrl system enables the heat load to be shared between evaporation and heat transfer, depending upon the ambient weather conditions, in order to prevent discharge of cooling air no wear to its saturation point that cooling in the vicinity of the tower causes local condensation and fog. The process is used for cooling of water in industrial applications where local misting and condensation are unacceptable and it has a lower water usage than a totally evaporative cooling system.
