Abstract

Light guides comprise a coherent bundle of optical fibres enclosed in a sheath of insulating matl., where the interstices within the sheath are flooded with a high dielectric liq. Specif. liq. is silicone oil and viscosity ca. u,000 cSt, dielectric strength of (120-140)x105V/m, relative permittivity of 2.6-2.7. Sheath is of PTFE. The end of the guide is sealed with a cap fitted with a valved outlet for use when filling the guide with oil. The guides are useful for inspection ports between two positions operating at different electrical potentials w.r.t. each other or the earth. For a fibre bundle 5 mm.dia. x 6 m. long, operating limits may be raised from 380kV sustained potential, 970 kV surge voltage to 680 kV sustained potential, 1550 kV surge voltage.
