Abstract

An overhead electric cable for use as a power conductor or as an earth conductor and including at least one optical fibre 11, the fibre or fibres being disposed within a fluid-tight non-metallic tube 17 which is surrounded by at least one layer (e.g. layers 18 and 20) of elongate reinforcing elements 21 and conductors 19. The or a such layer (e.g. layer 18) has its elongate elements (conductors 19) arranged so as to co-operate together to impart a self-supporting characteristic to that layer (e.g. by having sector cross-sections and being helically applied), and said layer or layers are applied to form an anti-torsional system. <IMAGE>
