Abstract

The strip for rolling is joined by simultaneously carried out cleaning and welding by means of a twin nozzle plasma gun with separate gas feed into each nozzle in which are located electrically from each other insulated electrodes. These are supplied alternately with non-overlapping impulses of opposed polarity electrical current. The current density in the nozzle supplied with negative current is maintained >=30% larger than that in the nozzle with a positive current supply. An al-He gas mix is pref. supplied to the negative current carrying nozzle and A only is passed through the other. The method effects excellent surface oxide film removal on welding, permits maximum arc penetration depth and is fast. It is used in rolling mills for joining following-on steel coils etc. with each other prior to rolling especially for materials such as stainless steel.
