Abstract

The polymer (I) has a specific viscosity is not 20 dl/g in 2N NaCl soln. at 25.5 degrees C and a Huggins constant 0.2 and contains 50-99 wt% acrylamide (II) and 1-50% acrylic monomer (III), i.e. acrylic acid or its alkali metal salts. (I) is used as thickeners, flocculant, viscosity regulator etc. e.g. in the treatment of sewage, muds from ore processing, paper mfr. and petroleum recovery and is effective at low concns. It is produced by exposing an aq. soln. contg. 25-60% (II) or (II) and (III) to high energy ionising radiation with an intensity of 1000-7500 (5000-5000) rads/h. at a total dosage of 500-7500 (1000-5000) rads, until is not >75 (15-60) wt% monomer is converted to polymer. Up to 5 wt% of another ethylenically unsatd. monomer can be added.
