Abstract
Adsorbent consisting microorganism cells bonded together by means of a polymer is used esp. in treating waste water. The adsorbent has a high capacity for impurities such as heavy metals and dyes. The adsorbent particles are large and can easily be sepd. from the treated water. In a continuous process, using the adsorbent in a column, large amts. of contaminated water can be treated rapidly. The microorganisms may be yeasts, green algae or bacteria, specif. Saccharomyces, Mycotorula japonica, Torulopsis utilis, Cglorella or Soenesdesmus. Suitable polymers include polyacrylates, polyvinyl alcohol and melamine-formaldehyde resin.
