Abstract
1310848 Purifying water HYDRO INTERNATIONAL AG 19 April 1971 [27 Feb 1970] 22569/71 Heading C1C Water containing organic pollutants is purified by passing the water through a filter bed of porous material having a specific surface between 10-400 sq. m./gm., the bed containing an aerobic bacterial charge such that the polluted water and oxygen is fed to the bed and aerobic degradation takes place therein. The porous material is preferably a resinous charcoal obtained by carbonization of resinous wood sawdust which has been impregnated with a dilute sulphuric acid solution. The process may be carried out in the apparatus shown in Fig. 2 wherein polluted water enters a tank formed by casing 10 via inlet 13 or is aerated by spreader 19, the aerated liquid then passing through the filter bed 11, purified water passing out of the tank at outlet 15. Purified water may be re. cycled via 40 to dilute heavily polluted water. At intervals water and/or air may be passed upwards through the filter bed to clean and regenerate the same. Heavily polluted water may be purified by the process of the invention by utilizing two tanks connected in series (Fig. 3, not shown).
